Summer 2026: Commissions and Performances

It’s been a fantastic year for Laguna Flutes: We commissioned THREE composers for our ‘Myths and Legends” concert, performed August 2nd at the Nixon Library and also August 7th in Portland at the NFA convention. Our first commission was Siren Song, written by Ed Hogan. Ed had previously transcribed a vocal arrangement for us, and I admired his voicing and flute blend. He created a stunning dramatic work that packs a punch in just over four minutes..the perfect concert opener. Our second commission was by James Marshall, entitled Grandma’s Village. This work was inspired by the American legend Grandma Moses, who began painting at age 78 to stay active. Her painting ‘Sugaring Off’ inspired this musical piece. It sold for 1.2 million after her death at the age of 101. Our final commission was by Alexandra Molnar-Suhajda, one of our group’s favorite composers. The Idylls of Thalassa was the result. Alex told me that she wanted to write something inspired by the ocean since our group’s name, Laguna Flutes, is also derived from oceanic influences. Check out our program notes for a deep dive!

Our NFA trip included a welcome dinner the evening before our VERY early (8:00 am) warm-up on Friday morning. Our concert was well attended, and Jim Marshall (composer of Grandma’s Village) was in attendance at BOTH of our performances. It was even more special to know that another one of Laguna Flute’s commissions, The Spirit of Water, by Peter Senchuck, was performed at this convention. Commissioning beautiful music is part of our mission, as is growing a supportive performance community. Mission accomplished on both accounts!
